What is Active Hydroponics? Print

Hydroponic systems can be active or passive. Nutriculture hydroponic systems are active. Active hydroponics is a method of growing that gets much better results than other methods of growing.
As with all hydroponic systems there’s no soil. The difference between an active and a passive hydroponic system is the way the plants are fed. In an active hydroponic system the root zone is automatically provided with a mix of water and nutrients in quantities in excess of the rate of uptake. Whatever the plants don’t use drains away.

Why is Active Hydroponics so effective?
In closed cultivation systems including pot cultivation and passive hydroponics the grower has to decide what quantity of water and nutrient and in what ratio plants should be fed. This is difficult and even the most experienced growers make big mistakes.
Active Hydroponics is open cultivation. The plant is automatically provided with water and nutrients and simply takes what it needs from what is supplied. Whatever the plant doesn’t need drains away or into a reservoir to be reused. This prevents over or under-watering or feeding.
There are simple rules to follow regarding the make-up of the nutrient solution and all you need is reliable kit, that’s where Nutriculture come in. Plants grown in active hydroponic systems develop strong healthy roots, have easy access to oxygen, water and nutrient, and overfeeding and underfeeding is prevented.
The History of Hydroponics
Hydroponics isn’t new. The gravity fed Hanging Gardens at Babylon were a very early example of active hydro. Today stream cultivation of watercress uses active hydro principles. Although Active Hydro was used to grow crops commercially during WW2 it wasn’t until the mid to late 70’s that the technique became widespread. Nowadays active hydro is the dominant growing technique in commercial horticulture.

What is relatively new is the small scale (domestic) side of active hydroponic growing. Since the company was founded in 1976 Nutriculture has been at the leading edge of active hydroponics. We are committed to providing innovative, effective and affordable kits, which are sold all over the world.
